Millennium Dragon Liuli Ceramic Sculpture

Named the Millennium Dragon when its design was re-created by the official Liuli kiln workshop in 2000, this sculpture is based on a Ming-style chuíshòu—a dragon-form creature traditionally positioned on the descending ridge of a Chinese roof.

Its lifted head, swept horns and curling tail rise above modeled waves. Celestial Blue, Emerald Green, Imperial Gold and Opaline Ivory glazes articulate the scales, mane and water, gathering with greater depth around the sculpted contours.

Because historic Chinese halls were constructed primarily from timber, dragons and water imagery carried a protective wish: water against fire, with the dragon represented as master of the sea. Re-created for interior display, the Millennium Dragon retains the force and upward movement of its architectural source while bringing its modeling and glaze work into close view.

Care:

Lift the sculpture with both hands, supporting its rectangular base and body. Do not carry it by the horns, mane, tail or projecting limbs.

Dust the recessed areas with a clean, soft-bristled brush and wipe the broader surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, use a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not soak, handwash, place in a dishwasher or use abrasive cleaning materials.
