Rows of raised waves cross the square surface within a shaped border. Glaze gathers in the recessed channels and thins along the crests, allowing the relief to change with the light. Made in Mentougou, Beijing, this Liuli ceramic coaster is designed to sit beneath a teacup or small vessel—a compact interpretation of the wave bands long used in Chinese ceramic decoration.
